I have had fun in designing this quilt.  It lends itself to multiple fabric choices so can range for those who are interested in many colors from …. primitive, 30s, solids, scrappy, patriotic, modern.

Each month a new block will be revealed.

Some months will have more blog posts than others, but we will go through several choices.   If you can’t wait the whole month for the next one (like me), you can join the Facebook group HERE.  They will be released weekly.

Each blocks is a 12-1/2″ x 12-1/2″ unfinished square.

They will be set on point when stitched into the setting which will finish at 17″ x 17″.

Whether you draw from your own stash, buy fabrics for this or kits, we’ll make this quilt in manageable steps that will have hints and tips along the way.

My hope is that you’ll love this so much that you’ll want to make it in several variations.  I know I will be.

Let’s get prepared.

These are the fabric requirements based on Kona cotton solids.

You will need to add 1/2 yard for binding.

Helpful Hint 1:  When pressing your applique, press it on the front and then turn it over and press from the back.  This will help insure your appliques staying on.

I chose to do mine raw edge applique.  To make the hat contrast just a little from the beard and mustache, I used a fusible fleece on the pom and cuff.  Wool felt is a great alternative to use also.  I did end up stitching around the fleece to help it show more.  See last picture on this post.

Buy fusible fleece HERE.    Buy wool felt HERE.

Helpful Hint 2:  When stitching around fabrics that do not contrast with the surrounding fabrics, mark them with a water soluble or heat disappearing marker.

Santa is expressing how I felt trying to stitch around his mustache.  I just could not see the white on white fabrics.

I traced along just inside the edge of the applique pieces (just the white) to give me a guide of where to stitch.

I then ironed the disappearing ink to leave only the thread.

So I was brainstorming on how to create a quilt with tons of different designs that someone could pick and choose the blocks that they want to stitch.  I came up with a theme and started brainstorming up a storm! (Pun intended)  I have a long list that will be revealed as each block is revealed.  However, I am sure there are some things I didn’t think of.  Send me your ideas as well as very short sayings and quotes.  I can’t promise that they will make it into the quilt, but I sure will try.

I do know that not everyone is going to want to do every design.  You can put just a few together to create a design that you want or you can put together the whole quilt.  I will end up creating more designs than there are spaces.  I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.  There are traditional applique and machine embroidery to choose from.  The traditional appliques will include 2 sizes in each design depending on the project you have in mind.
